What is Natural Wine?

Like its best vintages, viticulture just keeps getting better with age. Connoisseurs of the vine have played witness to an evolution in the world of wine and its appreciation toward a more environmentally conscious approach to production. Winemakers who previously had been producing for profit’s sake, alone, are beholden to their consumers’ wishes for a purer expression of the vine like never before. Those producers are being celebrated as pillars for a strong movement within a traditionally change-resistant industry. “Natural wine” is on the scene and it’s here to stay.

But what constitutes a truly natural wine, as opposed to the traditional wines we’ve known and loved for generations? Isn’t wine generally natural, anyway, as it’s always been? It turns out that the difference between natural wines and industry-traditional wines spans a significant gap.

Natural wine, unlike traditional wines and vintages, focuses on as little interference with the wine in its pure form as possible. Common additives like pesticides and non-native yeasts are often used in the process of producing standard wines. While these make the production of wine relatively more efficient at a large scale, they are unsavory for the environment and are known to cause harm to consumers.

Because of this focus on purity and more sustainable cultivation of grapes, natural wines are often classified as biodynamic and organic. The label “biodynamic” holds a lot of weight in culture today - not only as a buzzword you might see in grocery stores or advertisements but as a signifier of the grower’s relationship with their land. The soil fertility, plant growth, and livestock work in concert to contribute to the health of the entire ecosystem. This type of agriculture is difficult to pull off at scale, resulting in a rarer, more artisanal version of wine from small producers who are highly attuned to the land they grow on.

With all of the special attention paid to wine producers’ impact on the environment surrounding, we could easily forget about the added benefits for us, the consumers. ‘Little to no additives’ also speaks to the wine’s ingredient profile - sugar, sulfites, dyes, and flavoring are anywhere from minimized to completely omitted in the production process. This supports those choosing to live their healthiest lifestyles. Natural wines are paleo- and keto-friendly, low-carb, and 100% vegan. Consumers can rest assured that their choice of natural wine will

There are many reasons we believe natural wine is here to stay. The production process  harkens back to winemaking and its roots. Natural wine is the purest expression of the vine, as it was thousands of years ago. Overall, people want their wines ‘from land to grape to bottle’ because it ensures a level of flavor and purity that reflects wine as nature intended it. The movement toward natural wine as a larger subsection of the entire industry was a relatively quick one. However, we believe it’s not just the trendy wine to select. Natural wines are some of the best-tasting, healthiest wines in the world.
